The forklift counterweight is located at the rear of the forklift, behind the operator and the rear axle. It is a heavy mass, usually made of cast iron or steel, that counterbalances the weight of the load being lifted by the forks, preventing the forklift from tipping forward.
The Counterweight's Position and Purpose
On a counterbalanced forklift, the counterweight is positioned at the very back of the vehicle body. It acts as the balancing force on one side of the forklift's fulcrum (the front axle), offsetting the weight of the load on the forks. This allows the forklift to lift heavy loads without the need for external stabilizers.
Variations by Forklift Type
The exact nature of the counterweight can differ depending on the forklift's power source.
Internal Combustion (Diesel/LPG) Forklifts: These typically use a dedicated cast-iron or steel counterweight fixed to the rear of the truck frame.
Electric Forklifts: In many electric forklifts, the large, heavy battery itself serves as the primary counterweight. The battery is often located under the operator's seat or platform, positioning its weight at the rear of the machine.
