Forklift fork dimensions are typically expressed in the order Thickness × Width × Length. A standard fork size, for example, is 1 ½” × 4″ × 42″. However, the "standard" size varies depending on the fork's ITA (Industrial Truck Association) class, which corresponds to the forklift's carriage size and lifting capacity.
Standard Fork Dimensions by Class
The table below outlines the most common dimensions and capacities for the primary ITA fork classes.
ITA Class Typical Fork Thickness Typical Fork Width Typical Fork Length Approx. Fork Capacity
Class II 1.25" – 1.75" 4" 30" – 72" 3,700 – 6,800 lbs
Class III 1.75" – 2" 5" – 6" 48" – 120" 8,200 – 12,600 lbs
Class IV 2" – 2.5" 6" 42" – 96" 12,600 – 21,400 lbs
Common Standard Sizes
While the table above shows the range of possible dimensions, there are several commonly used standard sizes:
Length: Standard in-stock fork lengths are typically 42", 48", 54", 60", 72", and 96". For a standard 48" pallet, a 42" fork is often used.
Thickness: The most common thickness is 1 ½ inches. Other standard thicknesses include 1 ¾”, 2”, and 2 ½”.
Width: Standard width for Class II forks is generally 4 inches. For Classes III and IV, typical widths are 5 and 6 inches, respectively.
Light-Duty Forks: A standard light-duty fork might measure 1 3/8 inches thick, 3 1/4 inches wide, and 42 inches long.
How Fork Dimensions Are Measured
Thickness: Measured along the heel or the vertical part of the fork (shank). Use the back side of the fork, not the bottom, as the bottom wears down with use.
Width: Measured across the face of the blade or heel.
Length: Measured from the tip of the fork to the front face of the heel.
The bottom line: A standard forklift fork size is often cited as 1 ½” × 4″ × 42″ for a Class II fork. However, the actual standard size depends on the fork's ITA class, with Class II forks typically having a 4" width and Class III and IV forks having 5" and 6" widths, respectively. Common stock lengths include 42", 48", 54", 60", 72", and 96". Always ensure your forks match your forklift's carriage class.
