Measure a known length – typically measure over 10 to 20 chain pitch links.


Calculate elongation percentage:


Measure the actual length of the chain section.


Compare to the nominal length (number of links × pitch).


Elongation % = (Actual Length – Nominal Length) / Nominal Length × 100


Example:


Nominal length (20 links at 12.70mm pitch) = 254.0 mm


Actual measured length = 261.6 mm


Elongation = (261.6 – 254.0) / 254.0 × 100 = 3.0% → Replace immediately


Note: Elongation occurs due to wear in the pins and bushings, not stretching of the metal itself. The measuremen indicates the accumulated wear in the chain joints.
